Qigong (or Qi Gong) vs Tai Chi—What is the Difference

Both Tai Chi and Qigong are ancient Chinese traditions known to improve health, relieve stress, and increase energy. Many people wonder, however, what is the difference between Qigong and Tai Chi?

Online Qigong Lessons

When you practice Qigong, it is often for a specific body part or situation. For instance, you may choose to work on a series of movements that will help open the hips and restore comfort and free-flowing movement.

Qigong can be helpful at relieving joint pain, particularly in the knees, and for back pain. Qigong improves posture and therefore relieves tension and strain on the joints and muscles. It also restores the flow of qi and blood, promoting health and wellness. It can further slow the progression of bone density loss through the placement of mild stress on the bones.

It is believed that the regular practice of Qigong can help improve sleep quality and even sleep apnea. This is partly due to the practice including deep and regular breathing during exercises.

Online Tai Chi Classes

When you practice Tai Chi, you incorporate movements from the entire body, versus just one part. As the instructor explains the movements, they will often make reference to where your feet, legs, hips, torso and arms should be and how they should move and flow through each pose.

Tai Chi focuses on refining form and adhering to principles. You may think of Qigong as a micropractice and Tai Chi as a macropractice.

Tai Chi is also considered a martial art, where Qigong is not. Tai Chi is a defensive form of martial art, though most people in the U.S. do not practice it this way. However, very advanced Tai Chi students learn to execute movements much faster than we generally do them in Tai Chi classes. They employ the principles of balance and muscle relaxation to absorb and deflect blows.

Both Tai Chi and Qigong can be helpful in relieving anxiety, boosting your immune system and promoting weight loss. Studies have shown that those who participate in Tai Chi and Qigong classes regularly lost weight after a 12-week check-in. Part of the reason may be because Tai Chi and Qigong help relieve stress, anxiety and depression. Often these issues lead to uncontrolled eating and drinking, and therefore weight gain.

Qigong has many more forms and styles vs Tai Chi and is a system of wellness without martial application. Learn more about the difference between tai chi and qi gong.
